Meet Prisoner/Inmate:

Dear Traci,
Hello! How are you doing? As for me, I am surviving.
I got your letter dated
July 28th. I was intrigued by it. I know there are a lot of
different people who
want to help prisoners, and for that I greatly appreciate it. It
makes inmates like
me have hope. I want to help you if I can. I just hope you
understand, as a
death row inmate, I have to keep my case out of it, due to the fact that
I am
currently appealing my case. However, I can talk about my past.
Let me tell you a little about myself first. I am a 24-year-old Hispanic
male who
was born in Twin Falls, Idaho. I grew up for the first 13 years of
my life in a
small town in Elko County called Jackpot, Nevada. I was raised by
a single
mother, who had boyfriends and a few ex-husbands, throughout my childhood.
I
have three brothers. We were physically and emotionally abused by
a
stepfather for 3 1/2 –4 years. My mother finally divorced him and
by my 10th
birthday, she married a wonderful man who treated us like his own.
It was a
shock to be treated good after all the years of abuse. Although my
mother was
protective of us all it was a bad thing. Our new stepfather Salas
was sick and
they both hid it from us. By my 11th birthday, he killed himself.
I trusted his
best friend and went to him for comfort but was raped by him. So
I gave up on
life. I was tired of being hurt and embarrassed that I was raped
by a guy that I
held it in. Soon after my 11th birthday, I had my first encounter
with the law.
For the next two years I got into trouble and a few months after my 13th
birthday I was sent to Nevada Youth Training Center for Boys, only to be
transferred 3 months later to Caliente Youth Center. I spent 9 months
there and
was let go. My mom and older brother moved to Bullhead City, Arizona
so I
went with them. I did good for two moths and then began drinking
and doing
drugs. I was on one year parole from CYC. I was caught drunk
and my parole
was extended. Just before my 16th birthday I was caught selling upper
pills.
By now I was heavily in to a gang and being more unruly so I was sent to
West
Care Treatment Center which was a drug rehab. I spent about 5 months
there
and released only because my mom moved back to Idaho. I was out for
3 or 4
months and was arrested and was sent to St. Anthony’s Youth Center in St.
Anthony’s, Idaho. I was there for two years and released only because
I turned
18 years old. I only got into more trouble after I was released.
I got deeper into
drugs and two years later I was arrested for the current crimes and have
been
locked up ever since.
All my life I used excuses for why I did what I did and blamed a lot of
people but
after you’ve been locked down like I am and have to face the possibilities
of
dying soon, you begin to think and evaluate your life and you realize that
it’s no
one’s fault but your own. You see, it was hard for me to see and
face my
problems. So I began getting into trouble. It was the rush
I got when I got away
with it but that got old so I went up the drug chain. I avoided the
one thing that I
should have faced, :responsibility”.
Well, that is the short version of my life. If you have questions
feel free to ask.
I will be honest. The only subject that is off limits now is my current
case.
However, in the future that may change. I would like to help if I
can. I know that
if I had someone to help outside the institution I may have had a better
life.
I am sending the request form and I hope you could post it on the website.
It
would be great to meet new people.
Again, I want to thank you for your letter. I hope you help
a lot of people and if
I can help I would gladly do what I can. Take care and God bless,
Thank you
for your time.
Sincerely,
Robert Poyson
PS- Traci, one thing about my case are the charges. I can tell you them.
