RAYMOND
GURULE
Art & Poetry From San Quentin's Death Row
Raymond is
a Native American from the White Mountain Apache tribe, who is on San Quentin's
death row. He is 40 years old and has been on death row there for 18
years now, with little or no outside contact at all. He writes poetry
and is an accomplished artist. He welcomes your letters. He has asked
us to put up his poetry for all to see, and he would love to hear from the
outside world...death row is a very lonely and isolated existence. Raymond
has no contact with his family. If you wish to write to him, you can
directly to the address at the bottom of the page, or use the email address
the Canadian Coalition Against the Death
Penalty has set up for him, and we
will forward it to him by snail mail. (Inmates have no access to computers
or the internet.)
See bottom of page
for address and email.

Poems
from Death Row
SOMEONE
Somewhere
in my heart beyond all my pride,
Holds
a secret desire so intense deep inside
Imprisoned
with all my passion & love,
Unknown
to anyone but the Lord up above.
A desire
for someone to cherish & hold,
The
need for a love to call my own.
Someone who
keeps me shining through day & night,
Someone to
kiss & make up with after a fight.
Someone who
appreciates & respects all I can be,
Someone who's
strong enough to commit & love only me.
Someone who
will be there to kiss away my tears,
Secure my
doubts & release me from my fears.
Someone who
I can depend on to be my best friend,
Someone who
can restore my faith in love once again.
This love
is like a dream that has yet to become true,
or, so I believe-until
I met you...

NO PLACE TO HIDE
Where do you
hide when you disappear ?
Where
do you run when you shed a tear ?
In
who or what do you depend ?
How much longer
are you going to pretend ?
I admire how
you are, so brave and strong,
But,
I think that being closed up is wrong.
You don't
try to believe, You don't try to doubt,
Because you've
never known what love is all about.
You try to
have courage, faith, and goodwill,
But,
Inside I think you are vulnerable still.
Keep it up,
stay strong and do your best,
Yet sometimes
come over and cry like the rest . . .

LOVE
Love is the strongest
and most fulfilling emotion possible,
It lets you share
your goals, your desires, your experiences,
It lets you share
your life with someone,
It lets you be
yourself with someone who will always support you,
It lets you speak
your innermost feelings to someone who understands you,
It lets you feel
tenderness and warmtn-a wholeness that avoids loneliness,
Love lets you feel
complete.

I DON'T WANT TO LOSE YOU
When you are
away from me I worry sometimes that something will happen to you-something
that might take you away from me,
I know I should
only have good thoughts,
but I guess I'm
just a little insecure.
I can't help but
worry because
you're the best
thing that ever happened in my life.
You mean everything
to me...
and I don't want
to lose you.
