JUSTICE - WHAT DOES IT MEAN ?
An Essay By Florida Death Row Inmate Loran Cole

For society, justice means giving the Government control over ones life and giving them rules they MUST live by.  If you fail to abide by the laws and rules of society you are considered an outcast and depending on the violations you could be sent to prison for so called reprogramming (rehabilitation) and when one comes to prison and learns of justice it takes a new form of JUST-US in prison because society  has lost sight of the moral values our past Generations have set in action.  Granted we call it progression and evolution and the changing times, but the path its leading us down to destruction and in a similar form of Dictatorship such as the Hitler Regime where one man is to control the action of multitudes.
Are we becoming such a Society that we can no longer discipline ourselves and our Lives that we need someone (Government) to protect us?
I ask you to just take some time and think of these forms of Our Government that are ruling us.
    1) Health Rehabilitative Service (HRS), family services, this Branch of society tells us we cannot correct / spank our children when they have done something wrong (stealing-fighting-smoking etc) and if you are reported for correcting your child this office can and will take your children away and make the parents spend thousands of dollars for parental counselling  to not spank their child or they will take the kids and place in foster homes until they can be placed / adopted.  This is done under the guise of protecting kids from being punished for wrong acts.
    2) Court systems, Lady Justice at her finest.  For this I shall give you a brief scenario and answer.  Suppose yourself and a neighbour had gotten into a small fight over your dog doodying on his lawn, now in this fight you end up in the hospital for a few days with some cracked ribs or broke leg / arm etc, now your neighbour only has a small scratch or bruise, yet he still feels anger towards you for the inconveniences and says, "Hey, I know how to fix him, (you)" and what he does is telephone the police and says "you beat him up or attacked him for unknown reasons." the police will come to see your neighbour and fill out an incident report sheet stating you beat him up and that the officers observed him with cuts and bruises etc.  Now the police also come to obtain your version of the incident and as soon as you say "yes we had a disagreement or fight" and thats all they need to hear.  Who do you think is going to jail?  You are, even though you are the one with the most damages / injuries.  You are going to jail!
Why, you're wondering? Simple.  All because he (your neighbour) called or seen the police first to report it.  It is not who actually starts the action but the first to the police.
    3) Crime and punishment.  Simple question, as I don't want to strain your brain with all the million dollar words that prosecutors are good for throwing at citizens.  "Should you be held accountable for another persons actions?"
Scenario time.  You and a friend are riding in your car and he says "pull over to the store I need some smokes.", so you do and wait in the car while he goes inside and unaware of whats going on, he comes out like nothing happened and ya'll pull away, and about 4 blocks from the store your car is pulled over by the police and your friend is found to be the robber who just robbed that store you left and he is arrested and yourself unaware of what went on are also taken in as an accessory to robbery.   You know you're innocent but you're taken to jail and charged and if you're lucky your friend will say you weren't involved but even that doesn't always work.  You are tried and convicted for a robbery you know nothing about.  Where's justice?
Another scenario.  You and this same friend are together somewhere and he decides "they have money lets rob them."  and he runs down this little scene to you and if you've had a few beers or smoked some grass or done another drug you fall prey to his domineering scheme and say "what the heck," and as you begin to carry through on this venture you realize " Damn I shouldn't be doing this," and before you can turn back your friend starts the robbery before you can voice an objection.  He has a weapon out, and attacking the victim, and a murder occurs, while yourself and other victim are standing onside and you're trying to stop the other person from getting caught in the action or being hurt by your so called friend.  The robbery is carried through by him and ya'll leave the victims in a desolate area to make a getaway.  Say a day or 2 goes by and ya'll are walking in a park arguing about what happened and the police just run up behind you and without seeing your  faces slam you to the ground  "you're under arrest"  and you go to jail where everything in your possession is taken from your person and it turns out your friend is still carrying the murder weapon and deceased victims property and yourself have a piece of ID and a car key that you'd gotten from your friend.  You are charged with 1st degree murder which by legal terms means you committed the crime yourself.  You know you didn't commit murder so you go to trial believing in the system, that it will clear you of murder and instead you recieve a death sentence for a murder you did not commit or try to stop.  Is that Justice?  Evidence all points to co def (your friend), he has the weapon, victims property, and scientific evidence known as fibres from his clothes were found on the deceased victim and even the surviving victim says they never saw you do anything other than hold them back, yet they saw your friend attacking their friend.
Now why are you sitting on death row?  Why, because a prosecutor believed you should have stopped your friend but how?  Do you jump in the fight and take the chance of being killed yourself or give your life for theirs?  Who is to say had you done that and gave your life that he would have let them walk away?
It boils down to a simple point, the LAW SAYS if you see someone commit a crime and don't stop or intrude / report it, you are JUST AS GUILTY AND CAN BE CHARGED FOR THAT CRIME.
As you can guess from these innocent scenarios no matter what you do or say you are damned either way.
You may have guessed by now that, if not then I'll tell you, I am a prisoner on Florida's death row because I did not prevent a so called friend from killing a young man and there is not a day that goes by I don't relive that night and see that young man smile before my friend took his life. I've run out of tears but my Heart still goes out to his family and my prayers will always be with them and for the loss of their son, and if you're that family and reading this I've never been able to tell you this before, but I am truly sorry for the loss and I wanted you to know this.

        Loran Cole's Penpal Request . . .
34 year old male looking for penfriends from far and wide.  I'm  just a simple country boy trapped in the grey bars of prison searching for anyone who would like to correspond and share insights of life and culture from their life, always willing and receptive to learning  and sharing, just need someone to do it with.  I am a high school grad  4.0 GPA and a bachelors degree in constructural drafting for steel  and concrete structural design.  I also have a state certificate for a  para legal course of which I've obtained since my incarceration and currently I'm working towards my doctorate in theology which I hope to  graduate in February 2000.  My current hobbies include drawing, crocheting,  and in general tinkering around with anything.  Reading is another project  I get plenty of and mostly espionage-thrillers-mystic from authors like Clancy, Saul, Rice Burroughs, King, Koontz, Michener etc.  Well I'm not sure  what else to add at this time so I'll close down and leave with this thought.  If you're like me and need a friend, then here I am...age, race, gender  unimportant, just drop a note and we'll go from there.  All responses will be answered promptly.  Thank you for your time.
