Jesus Angel Delgado
                                Florida's Death Row Abuses

It is in deep sadness we now reveal the truth about the desperation.
Please someone stop this cruelty now.
(The letter was written in Spanish and is here translated to English:)

                                   Tuesday (12:20 p.m.) April 4, 2000

By the time someone reads this note I would have been gone. I have
decided to give up my life in protest against this horrible atrocity that
the state of Florida is subjecting upon us who are sentenced to die.

They have decided that we no longer are to have any contact visits. The
little bit that we now have will be taken away from us without any
logical reason only to hurt us due to discerning biases against us who
are sentenced to die by this State.

I, JESUS DELGADO #658187, prefers to die before accepting this stupid
rule that is senseless. If I can not kiss or hug my dearest mother and
my family members, then what sense is my corporal existence have in this
world.

I have taken this step not only in my name but also for all my friends
and everyone who have made the decision to die by denying their body
nutrients.

The fact that we have been condemned to die does not signify that we are
to be entombed alive in a building. Once our visits of contact are
suspended, we are de-facto buried and isolated from the world.

Is this democracy? What you call civilization? If this is civilization
please I implore you on bended knees not to show me what it is to be
uncivilized.

In the State of Florida all convicts have the privilege to receive
contact visits. Only to us on death row is this being suspendedfrom.
discrimination?

Oh No! Democracy don't tolerate discrimination; give me a break. If this
is not that, then what is it? Without any doubt mister dictionary you
forgot a word.

I want this message to reach the world so this way they learn of the
abuses, violations and infringements against our constitutional rights
that are taking place behind these walls. All these things are close to
impossible to prove due to repercussions that we are subjected to.

This place is a concentration camp where guards, officials,
classification personnel and so called "doctors" abuses us. The animals
that are taken to veterinary clinics are treated correctly as if they
were "human beings". We receive incorrect treatments as if we're
animals.

The death penalty must be abolished. Only the poor is receiving it. Only
those without the monetary resources to hire a good dedicated lawyer are
being sent here.

Democracy? Give me a break! Take off your lamb costume you hungry wolf.
The lawyers sell us out. They put us in peril into the hands of district
attorneys. We are chess pieces not humans.

If someone wishes to know what it is like in hell, ask anyone who is
here on death row, sentenced by the State of Florida. We live here in
hell.

ANOTHER TRAGEDY UNDER MICHAEL MOORE !

The Hunger Strike, according to FL DOC officials, has ended following news of Delgado's suicide attempt.  Prisoners were told that no medical services would be offered to those who participated in the hunger strike, and following Delgado's act of solidarity, prisoners felt it was necessary to stop the strike before services might be needed and denied - and where someone might take his own life.

I have information from Mr. Delgado's appellate attorneys, Rev. Melodee
Smith and Roy Wasson, both of Miami, that Jesus is being treated and
evaluated at the North Florida Reception Center Hospital in Lake Butler.
Currently Jesus is in a Suicide Isolation Cell on the Crisis Stabilization Unit.  According to Jesus' doctors, he is up and walking around.  Smith and Wasson are conducting a thorough investigation into the suicide attempt while in the midst of filing appropriate motions to have Jesus' one remaining death sentence reversed.  Last month, they were successful in getting the Florida Supreme Court to reverse the felony conviction used to get two death sentences for Jesus and one sentence of death was overturned on proportionality grounds.

Any one who has specific and helpful info regarding the suicide attempt and
the prison's response, other than the press release issued by DOC on April 5, should please contact Rev. Smith at : melodee.smith@worldnet.att.net
She asks for prayers for Jesus and his family during this critical time.
