Juan Melendez - Innocent - Released From Florida's Death Row
On January 3, 2002 Juan Melendez became the 24th person to be released from death row in the state of Florida, the 99th Nationwide. Melendez spent 17 years on death row for a 1983 murder to which another man had repeatedly confessed -- evidence prosecutors withheld. CCADP's original posting:
Juan Melendez is a death row prisoner in Florida. He says that he is an innocent man, and his page includes detailed information about his case. The two police informants who were original suspects in the case have both since been found dead, shot in two separate incidents.  Police who worked on the case were discharged and discredited, as well as other shocking revelations about the complexity of his case. "Since the courts aren't listening to my cries for justice, I come to you and hope that you are able to assist me by spreading this miscarriage of justice  to any news media programs, such as 60 Minutes, 20/20, Dateline, or etc., etc. This case needs to be publicized, so people in this nation can see how an innocent man can be executed or spend the rest of his life in prison for a crime he did not commit."
 - Visit the CCADP's original page for Juan, with new links to news articles about his release.
Juan was finally released from Death Row January 3, 2002 !

INNOCENT  - Released from death row !
Aaron Patterson - Profile of a Wrongful Conviction: Released January 10, 2003
Aaron Patterson was on death row 17 years for the 1986 homicide of a Chicago couple.  The CCADP was contacted back in 1998 by Aaron when he was still on death row requesting a webpage to feature information about his wrongful conviction.   His conviction was based on an unsigned 'confession'  obtained through torture.    Police in Chicago's Area 2 Violent Crimes Unit  kicked and struck Patterson, suffocated him, and interrogated him for 25 hours with no attorney present.   The 'confession', written by police was not signed by Patterson. There never was any physical or circumstantial evidence against him. More than 40 black men were tortured with electric shocks,  suffocation hoods,  Russian roulette,  burns,  severe beatings,  and threats of death during a 12 year period,  resulting in the dismissal of a lieutenant in 1993.  Aaron has garnered international support, and his case was featured on 60 Minutes II, and several other news programs.   Visit Aaron's webpage proclaiming his innocence that the CCADP has maintained since 1998.
Aaron Patterson is now back in Prison on unrelated charges after police re-arrested him and charged him with drug and gun offenses during his lawsuit against the officials who wrongly imprisoned him. Aaron had been an outspoken activist upon his release.

Harold Wilson was acquitted of ALL charges and released after 16 years on Pennsylvania's death row November 15, 2005 after DNA evidence exonerated him.  He originally contacted the CCADP in March 1999 when he was still on death row proclaiming his innocence and asking for assistance... "I want to live because I am innocent of the crime for which I am convicted. You try and figure out how an innocent black man can end up on death row. I have asked a number of attorneys and friends this question, read many articles and have experienced first hand this penal system. The conclusions I have come to make me sick, because the indigent, uneducated, inarticulate black or white man without advocacy is at the bottom of the barrel, with the current government working only to protect its image at their expense. " His page includes the original writings, picture and poetry, as well as news on his release.

'I am innocent ! ' "  Visit his webpage for his contact information and pen pal request.

INNOCENT TO BE RE-TRIED / DIED IN PRISON BEFORE RELEASE !

Fred Thomas -  An Innocent Man on Pennsylvania's Death Row
"Rotten" was the word that Judge William Barry used to describe what Lynne Abraham, Roger King, and the rest of the Philadelphia District Attorney's office did to Fred Thomas. He cited police intimidation, witness's recantation and general dirty tricks by prosecution as a proof that "his rights were violated." Barry went on to say that "every person deserves a fair trail" and that "[Fred] did not get one."  Fred was deathly ill - he had end-stage liver disease, diabetes and hepatitis C. ...Thomas says prosecutors realize they have wrongfully convicted him but are unwilling to clear his name... Though his conviction has been thrown out, and the judge said he did not get a fair trial, he remains on death row because the state refuses to accept the judges ruling and is appealing it.

Lloyd Schlup - Overcoming A Death Sentence in Missouri
The retrial which Lloyd Schlup had struggled for 14 years to receive-- ended when he pled "guilty" and got life in a plea bargain offered by Cole County Prosecuting Attorney Rich Callahan. That he can't now be executed "is a victory," asserts Sean O'Brien, the appellate attorney responsible for uncovering new evidence which compelled Gov. Mel Carnahan to stay his execution in 1993 and federal courts to order an evidentiary hearing then retrial. Ironically, says O'Brien, "Fifteen years ago, Lloyd said he didn't do it and got death. Today they are ready to spare his life" when he admits guilt. It's not surprising that Schlup admitted guilt. "To appreciate Lloyd's decision you have to understand the pressure he was under and the sheer torture of being in that death watch cell twice." Lloyd was recently featured on A&E's special Investigative Reports during his time on Death Row at Potosi.
