Letters From
       Stephen Eversley
Executed by Trinidad & Tobago, June 1999

                                     Stephen's original penpal request :

With utmost sincerity I take this opportunity with the  hopes of gaining your most kind understanding and support.    My name is Stephan Eversley. I have been a prisoner for the past five  years, 3 of those on death row. I am interested in finding pen friends.  I am 25 years old. My hobbies are football, swimming, keeping fit and  writing songs and poems. My interests are philosophy because I study  it in school. I like reading the major works of David Hume (1711-1776), such as Treatise of Human Nature and An Enquiry concerning Human  Understanding. Even though he was never able to teach philosophy  because he lacked the proper academic himself, he later had an  important influence on thinkers and today his works are read and used  by students worldwide.  I hope to have as many friends as possible, any  age. I wish to give and  learn some more philosophy and to continue my studies while awaiting  my sweet day of freedom.  God Bless, look forward to every success.

The second last letter we received from Stephen:
(When the next letter came in the mail, Stephen was already dead.)
At the top of the letter is a sticker of two bunnies looking at each other.
The words say, "Jesus loves me, Jesus loves you."

Hello Dave and Tracy.
Hope fine and in the best of health.  Receive your both letters in the best of care and I am please to know you receive mines too, as for myself, things are not going the way I would hope but I'm not giving up the faith.  The local court of appeal has dismiss my second constitutional motion saying it has no merit.  But the lawyers have appeal to the Privy Council in London.  And it will be heard next month on 10/11/ and 12/.  I have been very busy corresponding with the english attorney and I was told that things look bleak.  But  then lawyers are not gods and the Lordships are unpredictable so one never knows.
Personally to me the motion has merit but its so deep that the C.J knows if he should allow the investigation to take place his name will come up and he will have to succumb to questioning by the defense attorney.  So this is why they dismiss the motion.  But again the local lawyers is already working on some information that I have past on to them (fresh evidence its call).  Once it is finish the brief will be send to the english lawyers and they will work from there.  The case could be send back to Trinidad and I could get a retrial.  We'll wait and see.
Have you compile the death penalty debate for me so far ! if you have and you haven't sent it
to  ---------, please change the destination and send it to me instead.  ----------- is not in the country and she won't be back until July.
You ask if I know anyone in Canada ?  Yes I do. I have some cousins living there for some years now but I can't remember where.  I also know some friends from school days living there too.  I've been told a lot about Canada and I once was offered the chance to visit but didn't.  Do you have magazines showing the place!  I'll be happy if you can accommodate me with some.  I can send you some of our reading stuff as soon as I get my $$$ my family sends me from N.Y every month.   We have not got any magazines printing here but the newspaper is cool.  Soon uh !
Do you mind sending some photographs of yourselves !  I'll like to see what you both look like.  You could remove my name and address from the penpal request on the net.  No one have written to me so far, so I guess its no use keeping it there anymore.  Hey ain't I have you both!  So whats the fuss uh!
I have pass on the name of your movement to the other inmates so I think they may be luckier than me with getting friends.  Maybe its my name Stephen !! :)
The conditions are not that bad.  I'm kept in a cell alone, I'm given sunlight everyday for one hour.  Sat. and Sun.  I'm inside.  Get to see my family twice per week.  I get to converse with the other inmates because we are very close kept.  We don't have radios and TVs for ourselves but we do hear the radio because there's lots of speakers set up all over the prison.  Its on from 6 AM to 9 PM.  The most boring times is when I don't have things to read (like now).  But I try not to let it overpower me.  I have a Bible which I read over and over, or I sometimes look at photos of -------.  I also read my "Oxford."  The world is so beautiful and it hurt me that I can't enjoy it like you.
I really feel lucky to have you both.  Its real nice when people can be so kind to someone they don't know at all.  I'm holding you all in very high esteem and I'll cherish every moment ot it, even if you somehow got fed up of me, I'll never feel offended because I know people move on in life, and opportunities are always presenting itself for people like you.  So I'll cherish it while its here.  :)
Did I tell you a retrial was order for my friend Don !  We the jury could not come to a verdict  so the judge order a retrial.  I have the whole case on the newspaper if you'll still like it I'll send it to you !
Its a beautiful place to come - nice beaches and sunlight.  Fruits and nice food, the beaches in Tobago is much nicer than those in Trinidad.  But then one will have to see for themselves.
I like cats more than dogs, they're very cunning and I like to see them in action.
The rain is falling right now and its cold.  I closing off now, and I going to brush my teeth, say my prayers, and try to get some sleep.  Haven't s;lept for the day.  Thanks again.  Please write soon will you.  Sincerely,
STEPHEN
