Hi, My name is Emmett Taylor. In the early part of 1992, I was convicted at the age of 16 for an armed robbery and given a ten year sentence. I did five years of my time and was released, with five years left to do on parole. I came home January 22nd of 1997at the age of 21. After three daysoaf being on the streets I got two (2) jobs paying good money and my future started to seem as if it was going well until two (2) weeks later. My little brother had dropped me off at my house in his car, and ten minutes later I came out of my house to find my brother and little cousin stopped by Detectives of the Jefferson Parish Police Department at the corner by my house. I went to the spot where my brother and cousin were being held and asked the Detectives and Officers what was the problem, as any other concerned relative would do and to my surprise I was told to put my hands on the car. I asked the Detectives what was their reason for searching me and he said that "He wants to take my brother and myself to the Bureau to ask us some questions about an armed robbery and homicide that was committed earlier that day (on February 18th, 1997)." My brother and I knew that we had committed no crimes, so we agreed to go with the Detectives. After arriving at the Bureau the Detectives put my brother and myself into separate rooms and they began to question me about my whereabouts earlier that day. I told the Detectives that I was at work and after being there for some time I had to go to our main office to speak with a woman by the name of Ms.Debbie. I spoke with Ms.Debbie and she told me that I had to go take a Physical at their doctors office because just the day before I paid $35.00 to take one at a doctors office local to my residence. We finished speaking with each other and I went home to take a bath and change my clothes because I had been at work, running in the sand doing my job and I didn't want to go to the doctor's office looking the way I did.
At the time of this murder I was at the doctor's office taking my Physical. The murder was committed at 11:45 and one of the nurses from the office testified that I left the office at 12:00. the Detectives took pictures of my brother and myself and showed them to the eye-witnesses and they did not pick us out in the line-up as the perpatrators. The Detectives learned that I had just come home from an armed robbery charge in 1992 and they (Detectives) plotted and gave me the charge. In their arrest warrant the Detective's said that their reason for placing me under arrest was because they found gun powder on my hand. I later learned in trial that this was not true. There wasn't any gun powder on my hand and the Detectives lied because the woman who was killed was a well known white woman of that parish. She lived in an all white community where there were no blacks and a lot of Detectives knew her, even the Sheriff. The Sheriff got on the news and lied to public by saying "He found the murder weapon," and scrutinized my name.
After being taken to the Parish Jail, the next day some Detectives came to the jail and tried to force me to go to the Bureau with them and I refused. So they took me to an office in the jail-house and jumped on me trying to get me to go along with a fabricated story that they had made up. I refused to go along with it for some hours until I was choked and repeatedly grabbed by the testicals. I was all alone, helpless, confused and they threatened to set members of my family up on charges if I didn't obey them. So for the sake of my family and self, I did what they wanted me to do. I put the fabricated story on tape for them and this is what was used to convict me. There was no physical evidence in my case and if it wasn't for the fabricated story and a sell-out lawyer I would be free right now today.
I told Sheriff Harry Lee of Jefferson Parish what his Detectives did to me and he said that "he didn't want to hear that shit." His job was on the line because the community wanted a killer and he gave them me. In 1989 or 1990 this Sheriff got on the news and stated that "he doesn't want black people in his parish period and if he caught one in an all white environment they will be brought to jail," and he's been holding up to that statement ever since it was made. Blacks are being exploited every day in Jefferson Parish and it will not stop untill someone takes a stand and get rid of this racist madness that goes on with black people there. I aint the first to be put on Death Rowfor a crime that I did not do and I won't be the last. Thank you my Brothers and Sisters for your kind ear.
