FROM THE PEN OF BOBBY RAY HOPKINS
Dear Friends, Family & Supporters of the "Free Bobby Ray Hopkins" Campaign & Movement:
Hello to each of you and I send my love, honor, respect and appreciation into each of your hearts, minds and souls individually.
Here it is a somewhat calm and quiet early morning as I occupy this 6 X 9 cell. Because it is cold, I am lying in my bed covered up to keep warm. But still I have the burning desire to be heard and soon to be free from the words that I write to you.
No
matter how filthy this place is, no matter how harsh the conditions and
the punishments are and no matter how cruel and violent this environment
is with its' rules, games and mistreatment, I will never accept the environment
that I have been exposed to. I'm sure that alot of you who are reading
this is familiar with this old saying: "I had to walk five miles to school
in 3 inches of snow because I missed the bus" or "I had to get up at 3:30
in the morning to feed the cows and chickens before I went to school each
morning". Well, whether it was
your mother or father
or your grandmother or grandfather who told a similar story to you - I
am a fine believer that if I put forth the effort(s) and the time that
it takes to educate myself on the injustice and the racism of a proud system
of institutional rule so that my story can be told and so that my voice
can/will be heard and that intelligent and non-opinionated people will
stop and listen to what I have to say.
So, at this stage in my life - my words must no become more powerful and meaningful. I can no longer write words that are without taste and watered down so to speak. The people who have oppressed and locked me up in this modern day mid-evil dungeon has made itself even more powerful than you as they feed, grow and benefit for their own personal gain off of society's energy and presence.
Most of the people who know me well and who have been writing me for some time now has known that I have maintained my innocence from day one, so therefore, I will always continue to do so until my hands and feet as well as my name and body is freed from the tight clutches of death and injustice.
Over the past 3 or 4 years of my 6 years of being here on Texas death row I have been campaigning for funds that would go toward hiring me the proper legal representation that I so desperately need and deserve and for so many years no one had taken that giant step forward and taken on that great responsibility until now. They have opened their hearts and minds to me and without mentioning the extraordinary family's name in revealing who they are, I know they know who they are.
In
the 6 years of my wrongful conviction and death sentence, the good people
I speak about who took it upon themselves to make an urgent decision to
hire me a lawyer, has shown and given me more love and support in one month,
than all and any other people or persons has done for me in all the 6 years
combined.
For that reason, I cannot
compare what they have done for me to no one else.
I thank you Mrs. D. R.
and Mr. D. R. with all of my heart and soul.
But, I wrote this letter article to send this message out. We must still stand togehter and continue our battle because in truth and reality, it isn't over until it's over and the financial and legal burden should'nt all have to rest upon any 2 persons' shoulders. Some of you can make phone calls and send pamphlets or fund-raising letters through a giant mailing list like through resident mail or names and addresses of people and businesses from the phone book and/or directory. It seems like when most of you write or e-mail me that you are all just standing around waiting for someone else to say or do something that you should be doing.
My case is now in the Federal Courts of Federal writ of habeas corpus which means that if I don't get any relief or positive news or action soon, I will then be on my final level of 3 appeals which no one in my situation wants to be. While one person is helping me with phone calls, etc., the other people should be helping me by organizing bake sales, car washes, coffee, tea, lemonade and then someone who has access to drawing and printing should take on the responsibility of having T-shirts made, buttons done, hats, posters, fliers, bumper stickers, with my picture, smile and words "Free Bobby Ray Hopkins" dealt an unjust hand.
Thank you for your world-wide love and support.
Your friend,
Bobby Ray Hopkins
PS: A special thank
you to Dave & Debra, Brenda & Richard, Dave & Tracy, Ebony,
Wendy Fancher, Kim in Texas, my family and to all the scared and silent
ones as well.
