The Canadian Coalition Against the Death Penalty has received the
following requests for pen pals from Mississippi death row prisoners.

SHAKA DANIEL MUHAMMAD Al-ZULU    Hello , my name is Shaka, I'm 36, 5'61/2", 158 lbs, Black Muslim.   I became an Islaamic Muslim in 1992.  I became a member of the Ansaara Allah Community later that same year.   I like to read and study the Holy Scripture.  I like playing Sports, Basketball, baseball and football.  But like watching all sports.   I have been on death row since 1986.  My cases have been in the court of appeal since 1998.   On December 16th, 1997, an Opinion and Order vacating my capital murder conviction and sentences.  On January 3rd, 1998, the State was granted a stay of Judgment pending appeal by the State of Mississippi.  The State's appeal is proceeding at the present time.   I like getting to know people and learning about different cultures.   I believe the only way to reach true Peace and Love in this world full of hate is to learn about each others does and don'ts and respect them.  As long as we keep trying to force people to believe in what we believe, we will never get past the hate.   Its all about respecting the next person.  So if you don't mind writing a man on Death Row, then I may just be the one.  I am seeking friendship not money.  However, I do ask for stamps to help with my writing.  I know there is nothing about my cases in this letter.  But if you want to know more just ask.  I will never tell you a lie.  If I cannot tell you the truth.   I will tell you that I can't answer that question truthfully and leave it at that.  This way I never tell a lie.  Please write soon.  In Allah I trust, Peace and Love, Shaka Daniel.  PS - Nov. 23,2000 - The Court of Appeals has ruled in my favor.   I am waiting to see if the State file a brief to the Supreme Court in the next 2 months.  I don't think they would hear it anyway./ Then its back to the County Jail for from my hometown for resentencing.  Happy Holidays
to one and all...

JOHN E. BOOKER   I am 40 yrs old, black hair and brown eyes.  I'm half black and half Cherokee, I love both of my races.  I love to write, workout, sports, chess, reading, and telling others about the death penalty, especially kids.  People in this country are very hungry to see people die and it don't matter if they are innocent, since they took the fad's out of Mississippi its been very hard on the guys in Mississippi on death row.  It even more harder to get a lawyer now, and most lawyers are scared to mess with death penalty cases.   I would like female or males, the color or age do not matter.  I just want someone who love to write and have a caring heart, when you are locked up you don't have friends. Thank you !

RICKY CHASE  I'm Ricky Chase and I'm currently on Mississippi's death row.  I've been on death row since March 1, 1990.  I received your name and heard about your organization and I'm obviously very much interested in any help that you can provide me with as far as internet access and or what avenues I'd need to proceed in trying to help establish a Legal Defense Fund.  I also want  to add that I am not just one more death row inmate who is crying foul or lying about his situation.  I'm one who was wrongfully convicted for a crime I didn't do.  Yes I was honest in owning up to the part I played yet I received the death penalty when I wasn't the trigger man and for that reason and reasons I need and am asking your help.  Thank you very much.

ANTHONY JOE DOSS I am asking for your support.  I need a voice that will speak out about how I being victimize by our Justice System.  The people  need to know the pain of my confusion and frustration, that hurt me as a human being, because of the tragic injustice and irony lies in the fact the most of victims of America's bestial are poor peoples, often denied due process of law and I fall in that class of peoples.  As you can see, I want to talk about me in this Justice System, and the philosophy of life that I find myself living.  I know that I can't give it all to you in this one sitting, because it will take more time than that.  So I will try to give you bits, and pieces of this puzzle in the hope that you will understand what I am trying to say to you.  The honesty that I am trying to give you is the unembellishing of the truth.  The prosecutors in poison the media mind with Negative untruth facts that is destroy my character, which in fact, he have never spend no time around me, only in the courtroom.  When he drawn up these illusory about me and how the crime happen there can be no justice when lies are put forth as truths, he couldn't even find anyone from my community to say one bad thing about me, but he tell the jury and the media I am a bad man and the only way to stop me is to sentence me to Death. So the jury did just that.  And there was no truth obtained in the trial.  All that was obtained was a conviction based on lies.  A prosecutor has the responsiblity of a Minister of Justice, and not simply that of an advocate.  The responsibility carries with it specific obligations to see that the defendant is accorded procedural Justice and that guilt is decided upon the basis of sufficient evidence. My trial lawyer Mr Hugh Lee Bailey Jr fail to give my trial jury any mitigating evidence on my behalf, that I was force at gun point and I thought my life was in danger because I was a victim of a home invasion that my sister was raped and I was forced to watch my sister being raped.  Also I had to watch a man put a knife to my 18 month old niece neck and force my sister to take off her clothes.   Me and my sister had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital where I was treat with head injuries  and my hands was injured.   The hospital bill for the treatment was sent to my mother next door neighbour  who give her the bill.  I told my trial lawyer Mr Hugh Lee Bailey Jr. all about this, thats why I took the stand because I thought he was going to show that to the jury, that evidence, plus to call my sister to testify on my behalf why I went in the store.  Also that is why my sister is under Physis medication and she must go to see Physis Doctor every month for this reason.  All my Trial lawyer Mr Hugh Lee Bailey Jr had to do is get the police report and the record from the Hospital where I was treated to show the jury.  I only had one trial lawyer and he was not qualified to handle a capital murder case.  And he made many mistakes which now he have given affidavit stated all the wrong he did at trial.  Even the private investigator have given affidavit stated that he didn't do his best work and the little work he did do, he made some mistake in it, if one can take all that in mind, how can one say truly.  I got alibi defense.  When you aren't able to hire a lawyer you will always be denied equal protection under the law and justice will never fill your cup up.  Poor people are aware of this abuse, for a disproportionate number of poor people suffer from it constantly.  I come to you ask for you to help me trial in my case in the media, and being already tried in the courtroom and the jury haven't heard the whole truth I was denied justice.  The only way I think I can get a new trial is with the help of the people, that they will help put pressure on the justice system- I know first I must show the people that the justice system didn't give me a fair trial.   And I must admit I really don't know how to go by trial in my case in the media and it have being wear and tear on my brain cells.  But no problems can be solved until they are faced squarely and illusion are possible.   So I am ready to face it head on.  Is there any question(s) you need to ask to help me do this and if there are any documents that I can send just let me know and I will try to get them to you.
Until next time take care of yourself and thanks a lot for your time.    Visit webpage at: http://ccadp.org/anthonyjoedoss.htm

BLAYDE GRAYSON  "My name is Blayde Grayson.  I'm 28 years old, born September 25th, 1974.  I've been on Death Row now for 6 years.  To describe myself:  I'm 5' 11", 160 lbs., brown hair, and blue/grey eyes.  I'm no fancy letter writer.  Just a lonely guy, who's looking for a friend/friends to write and fill the lonely hours in this cell. I like to read, draw, listen to music and, of course, meet and write cool, openminded, prospective friends!   I don't want to tell all my secrets in this intro letter.  Of course, then there would be no need for you to write.   I will say this, I do hope to hear from you soon.  I'll always be honest and try to keep you smiling and interested."

WILLIAM HOLLY      Hi, I’m Bill.  I’m looking for someone who would enjoy the adventure of sharing life with me.  Someone ‘real’, for honesty is a big issue with me.  Someone with a good sense of humour, imagination and creativity.  Someone who enjoys learning, teaching, and sharing the world’s many diverse wonders; who likes exploring life and actually ‘living’ --- not just existing.  This is the kind of friendship I’m looking for: something genuine, meaningful, and of mutual interest.  I’m open-minded and nonjudgmental  .  A good listener.  I’m an animal lover and lover of nature.  I love motorcycling, hockey, and beach volleyball.  My personality and pleasures are expanding and broadening.  Take art: a few years ago I knew nothing of Bellini, Gogh, etc.  But now, I’ve fallen in love with art and enjoy learning about it.  The same for music (from Mozart to Metallica), the theatre, poetry, literature (I read everything from Shakespeare to Terry Pratchett!), philosophy, religion, science, and so much more.Life is full of things I want to learn more about and experience, but on my own, I’d miss so much.  Plus, where is the joy of being able to share these things with someone who also appreciates them … unless I can first find that someone? They say that the ‘journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step’, but I believe the ‘journey of friendship begins with the first letter’!  So, won’t you please write me.   Sincerely,Bill.   For more information visit  http://www.ccadp.org/williamholly.htm

I am 31 years in age, and I love writing and meeting new people.  (Although at the moment I only have one true friend that I write to.)  I also like a variety of sports.  You name it and I can probably get into it.  I also like reading, (poetry especially,) writing poems, and listening to music.  I am not choosy as to who I correspond with.  I would prefer pen friends in America, but I welcome whoever would offer their friendship.  All I ask is that the person is honest and sincere, and they can expect no less from me...thank you on behalf of myself and other guys who are on the row who have found the courage to reach out.  Thank you !  Sincerely,

LARRY MATTHEW PUCKETT   I was born January 3, 1977.  My educational background ceases at graduation from high school.  I have a desire to learn about many things if given the opportunity.  My interests can be vast if I were to delineate them all.  To put some in a nutshell I like history, science, philosophy, logic, theology, and most all outdoor activities.  I'm a Christian and another Christian to write to would be a precious gem.   My thus far incarceration began on October 18, 1985.  Roughly 5 months post graduation.  I received the death sentence on August 5, 1996 at age 19.  I've been in prison since August 10th of the same year, on death row.  Another interest someone may be interested in knowing is that I am a 'military' man.  Though I have no experience in this area, I was enlisted in the Navy.  I was due for basic training, a month after I was arrested, in Great Lakes, Illinois.  Obviously, I didn't make it.  The irony is that I have a morbid fear of sharks, so go figure, huh ?  Some dislikes are of a pertinent nature.  I dislike abortion, vulgarness, pervertedness, lying, radical feminists, racists, and Bill Clinton enthusiasts.  That eliminates a great deal of people but I'm sure someone fits the bill.  In short a sage individual, male or female, would be ideal.  I would prefer to write people from Canada and the USA.   Thank you immensely for your concern for those of us in this predicament.  Deeply and sincerely yours,

I'm not choosy about who I write, or whom writes me, as long as their open minded & their conversation doesn't stem from or around negativity, b/c I deal with enough of that on a day - to - day basis.

WILLIE RUSSELL   Today is 1st Dec 1999 !  Intent of this letter : Friendship from behind closed doors !  Hello there friend, This letter is being sent to you from the environment of close confinement section...I am just taking a chance that this letter will reach you.  I hope it does, and I hope also, that somehow and in some way hearing from a new person might add some sunshine to your day.  With the circumstance in which I am currently reside  I am quite sure that a bit of sunshine would be a welcome sight with a response back from you.  If you should decide that you do not want to write to this soul-man, then just accept this letter as a friendly greeting with my hopes that the circumstances and blessings of life will soon have all of the positive elements coming your direction.  And, I would wish you the best of life and what it has to offer you from this day forward !  I have been seeking an everlasting "Pen pal" friendship for all the years I've been here.  Many have touched the edges of my life; coming and going scarcely leaving an impression.  I feel a very special reward when I can make a close friendship with someone I have never met or seen.  That scenario creates the situation for a friendship to be founded on all the right reasons such as what is in the mind and the heart, and all that can be topped with care and understandings.  In as much, therefore, a friendship is not based on material things, but in reality if a person cannot be accepted for what is held within that being, there is no such thing as a good friendship, then which would be based on material possessions.  Does this make sense to you ?  By my letter, I have created my own words (and nothing formal) as it may seems.  This comes from the bottom of my heart.  And so, I would assume as me, liking to meet and make friends with all people, I hope that I am able to fill the inner needs of some humor some of the time.  I feel good about that too.  And, why I write this to you, feeling a strong, positive vibration that kinda sent a message that there was the possibility of a long lasting friendship with a very little bit of effort, so now I am in the process of preparing this letter for you.  I hope it means something to you, to know that I am seeking your true friendship and making a new friend !!!  LOYALTY AND THE TRUTH IS WHICH I HAVE TO SHOW IN THE VALUE OF SEEKING FRIENDSHIP...I am 38 years old and I will make the almost "half century" mark on Sept. 30th, I am a native of Gary Indiana.  I tell people I will be "Twice 19" and that doesn't seem to sound nearly as bad as just "40."  I have been told that I do not look my age and that I have too many young ideas to act it.  That has been taken as a compliment and I am proud of it.  I am 79" tall and about 223 lbs, fair skinned complexion, clean cut with short curly black hair and brown eyes.  I have a great sense of humor, just a average guy with class and finesse.  But made a very bad mistake with the wrong choice to succeed in life.  Being here I just try to stay focused in faith and hope and just taking it one day at a time of endurings ! !!  I like to meditate to ease this loneliness time and change the layout of this place that bears on the mind !  My avocations is : Sports, music, writing, reading, keeping in shape, and keeping my mind active at all costs.  I have been here since 1985, a lifetime, it seems.  My mother died in birth of me, I never knew my father.  I have a older brother and sister but they have nothing to do with me, not even when I was free.  I was raised by my grandparents but they too have passed away since my incarceration.  I have no one left in this life but God.  So, I can use a friend I can talk to on paper to help ease my time, and to just be able to get my mind out of this surroundings place as often as I can !!!  With the fast paced and hectic routine of life here sometimes often make me feel like doing absolutely nothing. However, this is not a very frequent happening in my routine.  If you should decide to write back, I would like to know about you and what makes you be you !!!  Also, do you think we would be headed for a solid friendship, or is there perhaps more that you will be actually looking for in the expectation.  You can let me know just what you hope to gain from our correspondence and this initial contact opportunity...Does this sound like a workable plan to you ?  I want to get to know you, if you feel we are on common ground.   I hope you have room in y our life and in your heart for a new friend !!!  I am a human with a heart.  So I offer a surprise of friendship.  I feel you have a strong character which drives a sense of positive direction !  I "Read" that you are warmhearted and are truly "For real." Am I RIGHT ?  So, until I hear from you, if this is your choice, I wish you the best, and do keep something positive and happy to look forward to.  It can only help out in more words than you'll ever know!  Well, I'll leave you with these thoughts, and I will close and look forward to your further correspondence, letter back !!!  Take care, and may God be between you, and harm and all the empty places you may walk.  Do write when you have a chance to do so!  Sincerely and respectfully,

GARY SIMMONS    D.O.B. Nov. 18, 1962, 5' 11",220 pounds, Blond/Blue.   I write articles on Prison conditions, death row, as well as short stories, and three books in the works.  My appeals are still in the initial stages , so I don't have much to say regarding my case at the moment, though I expect that to change shortly. My interests in addition to writing range the entire scale.  I read everything I can possibly get my hands on Asimov to Zelany, concerning everything from Anatomy to Zoology.  I never know when I might want to include something in one of my stories.   When I was in the free world, I liked swimming, camping, jet skiing, boating, horses, target shooting, and shopping.  The last comes from having the worlds two most beautiful little girls, Heather & Felecia.  Since they endured me dragging them to the river anytime it was sunny, the least I could do was take them shopping at the mall when it wasn't.  I am the oldest of 12 kids, and ironic that I am in contact with only one sister.  As soon as I can get copies of the articles I've already written, I will be sure to send them on to you to be included on the website.

ROBERT SIMON JR.   I've been on death row for almost 9 years.  I'm 36 years of age and black as a moonless night.  Not that many prisoners here associate with me because I used to work here as a prison guard for about two years.  I would love to correspond with people who really care.  I'm enclosing a picture from my ID card.  Have a nice day.  Sincerely ready for new friends.   UPDATED 2003 PENPAL REQUEST :  My name is Robert Simon.  Born 8-23-63.  I am an ex-prison guard that is as black as a moonless night :) .  I have been on death row since 1990.  None of the other prisoners talk to me and I will never get used to that type of loneliness.  My time is growing near so please take a chance on getting to know me soon.  I have so much to talk about and ask about.   I spend most of my time studying law, reading anything I can get my hands on, and writing poems about my surroundings.  Thank you for your time,

ALAN DALE WALKER    I love honesty - that is, I prefer to share in any real person, rather than
illusions.  I'm not judgmental, and certainly  I know we all have good and bad.   I like to give smiles to share in smiles of others, and like to give hugs when someone may want  or need one.  I enjoy sharing in life, looking for new things to appreciate along the way.  I like the outdoors - boating a pretty river, or just hanging out on the riverbank; camping; dirt bikes...and I like  seeing those birds and trees and such too I like the night  air - from smelling it to breathing it, liking stars on a clear night, and also like rainstorms.   I like chocolates,  strawberries,  pizza, seafood  and kittens (no, I don't eat the kittens, I  just threw them in with the food... 'cause they get hungry too). I'm eager to meet you and answer your letters, so.. .hope to see you soon

I only have two things to give someone that writes to me, and they are honesty and a inside look at this place I have called home for so long, and you should feel free to ask ~ all the questions that might be on your mind to ask, for most people only guess what a place like this is, I can tell you how it really is!  I hope to hear from anyone that has a little time to spare, it doesn't matter to me if you are male or female, nor age, it doesn't matter to me, but in case it does to you, I am white, brown hair and eyes, with a big belly like santa! smile Most sincerely, Big Bob.    Updated Penpal Request :  Hello, hello out there, I hope things are going better for you than they are for me, but hell it could be worse, instead of me being here in this small ass cell for 21 years I could be dead, so I guess things aren't as bad as I thought.  :)  Let me make this short and real, no games, no bullshit, just straight up talk. I am going to tell you 2 things about myself and one rule that you need to know about from the start - 1) I have been here 21 years plus - I got here at 19, so you do the math.  2)  I do not plan to be asking / begging you for help of any kind.  - And the only rule that you need to know about right now is - you have to put a full return address on the front upper / left hand corner of all your letters/cards.  Waiting on you!!!
