We are writing to express the dismay and disbelief we feel at your states' plan to execute Canadian citizen Stanley Faulder on International Human Rights Day, December 10th.
Of course we are gravely sorry for the deep loss the victims family has had to go through. We are, however, concerned at the irregularities involved in this trial-the fact that important information concerning a head injury was never entered into evidence, and most especially, the fact that after being acquitted initially, he was later tried again by a prosecution financed by the victim's family. Surely even Texas cannot call this a fair trial.
Not to mention the fact that Mr Faulder was never given
his Consular Rights to which he is entitled under International law and
the Vienna Convention.
I'm sure you know that it was fifteen years before
the Canadian government was even informed that a Canadian citizen was in
jail in Texas, let alone under sentence of death.
We are surprised that you would put the positive relations between our two countries at risk. I know the European Union was thinking about an economic boycott, and if you allow this execution to take place, we will certainly begin a well publisized tourist boycott of Texas.
"Texas: Its like a whole other country" is the phrase you use on your tourist posters. We are beginning to believe its like a lot of other countries-Iran, Iraq, and the Sudan- some of the only other countries that insist on retaining capital punishment-and even these would certainly hesitate before killing a citizen of Canada.
We ask that you look into the ramifications of this situation, as well as the fact that it was so obviously an unjust trial, and please contact us as soon as possible to let us know how you intend to proceed.
Sincerely,
Tracy Lamourie and Dave Parkinson
