            The Canadian Coalition Against the Death Penalty has received the
            following requests for pen pals from death row prisoners in Georgia.
JAMES DOUGLAS ANDREWS African American male, age 29. D.O.B. March   1, 1969. Hobbies include researching church history, drawing, basketball, poetry, essay writing, logic problems, doing math, philosophy. Religious background: disciple of JESUS CHRIST (non-denominational) for 17 years. I graduated from high school in 1987; spent a very short time in college- forced to quit by depression. My major was mathematics. I was arrested in 1990. I am bi-polar (manic-depressive), or given to drastic mood swings which temporarily impair my judgment at times. I am single, 6' 3/4" tall, 215lbs. with brown hair & brown eyes. My ambition is to be a minister of Christianity. I choose to dedicate my remaining days to my creator because he is worthy to be served. I am seeking companionship. Loneliness is eroding my faith in people and in my own ability to make a positive contribution to society. I am not seeking mundane relationships. I am a deeply spiritual person and persons who are not spiritual will probably tire of me. My goals while on death row are to organize tutorial programs for the educationally challenged inmate and to maintain participation in group Bible study and psychological therapy. My guilt was determined by 12 reasonable jurors, yet my fate was affixed in absence of the knowledge of my mental illness. I do not believe I deserve to be on death row. Please write to:

KENNETH BRIGHT My name is Kenneth Bright - I am a death row inmate here in Jackson GA, USA. I am 6'4 - 235 - I am now 42 years of age (July 17-60)...I'm black ! The reason for telling y'all that I'm a black man is because of a somewhat funny experience I had with a pen pal - I was writing to this lady for some time about a year or so ago - things seemed to be going real well - So well that she became a friend to me in my heart - Get this! For some reason - all the time we had been writing to each other she was thinking that I was white - It came up one day and when I told her I was black - she said in her next and last letter to me that she was thinking I was white - the reason she gave was this (now get this) because of my last name being BRIGHT - I could not stop laughing at that :) for that was a first...thinking I was white cause my name is BRIGHT - now that was a good one. But in time it made me somewhat sad and hurt as well as disappointed in that being the reason for not writing to me anymore. But! I had to respect her feelings and get over it. I gave up on the pen pal service thing for some time - but because it is hard to deal with my feelings of loneliness at times - once more here I am...My interests! I read about what's going on in our world today - I would love to see pictures of places of that I have never been. I like for my mind to be taken away from being here on death row and the loneliness that comes with it. Looking for : someone that really wants to help and become a real pen friend to someone like me. ROBERT BUTTS When you want something that you have never had,you have to do something you have never done. What I want is true friendship, which lives in the heart, and I'm willing to open my heart on the chance that I may find that. My name is Robert Butts, and I'm a 26 year old death row inmate. I'm 6'1" tall and weigh 205 lbs, with an athletic build. I was arrested when I was 18 years old and I've learned a lot since my teenage years. Living without focus is only existing, and I wish not only to exist because I realize that life is short. ROBERT CONKLIN My name is Robert. I'm 39 years old and I've been here on Georgia's Death Row for 16 years. I have only a few friends outside the prison and haven't had a visit in the past year...The US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia has had my case since the summer of 1995. The only issues left for it to resolve are those involving the ineffectiveness of my trial lawyer. Over a period of two months in 1984 I was arrested, tried, convicted and sentenced to death. There wasn't time for my lawyer to do much of anything.....I am Catholic and attend the weekly services here. I'd like to be more involved in the Church but its difficult to do from here. I enjoy learning about my faith and would one day like to teach it as a catechist. I believe very strongly in education and have completed a BA in economics since being here. I would like to earn a graduate degree but have yet to find a program I can complete here. I intend to maintain my enrollment for as long as I'm here. I most recently completed a linear algebra course and will enroll in Principles of Finance next. Its a constant struggle to pay for courses...I also like to teach and am currently tutoring elementary algebra. Although I've never used it - or even seen it - I think the internet is fantastic. This is my first foray into cyberspace and though I have high hopes I really don't know what to expect....I am very grateful for the opportunity to participate. Thank you very much!

JAMES RINGO MCDANIEL Hello my name is James Ringo McDaniel and I have been on death row since June of '97. I wasn't suppose to be on death row, but a judge here in Georgia lied to me and I was sent here anyway. It began with a terrible mistake I made in 1994 which I am truly sorry I made. I took the life of three people and I have since then been in continuos contact with the victims families and they have forgiven me for what I have done and I have asked God to forgive me and I truly feel that he has done so. But Bilson Smith the Judge over my case told me and my lawyers that he is 90% sure that he would impose a sentence of life without parole and not sentence me to death if I were to plead guilty. Well I pleaded guilty and received a death sentence. I feel like I was lied to as well as my lawyers concerning the sentencing. I have since then had my case overturned or reversed but the damage has still been done. I've lost the relationship I had with family members and basically I have no one in my corner I can talk to or help me when I still need all the help I can get. I'm looking for someone who I can truly call a friend and someone who can help me through this very hard time. Even though I may have to spend the remainder of my life in prison there is alot of goals I want to accomplish. Such as taking college courses and getting a degree in culinary arts. Even though I am incarcerated my mind isn't. If a can find a true friend who doesn't mind helping a person that has nothing out financially, I would more than appreciate it. I need someone I can truly depend on and whom is willing to take a chance. I will send a picture when I am able to pay for one.

I have had a very difficult time adjusting to this horrendous reality...I have a beautiful princess for a daughter, she is 8 years old. I am a very colorful person, multifaceted, complex at times. I have lived an incredulous life, story book style at times. I could not truly paint glimpses of me in such a short letter but I am a Gemini. I for the most part am a voice, a team leader.
