In
reality, Florida has three Death Rows. Fifty-four condemned men are housed
in a special wing at Florida State Prison near Starke. The remaining 320
men are incarcerated in a building at Union Correctional Institution in
nearby Raiford. The six women on Death Row
are at Broward Correctional Institution near Pembroke Pines.
Executions are conducted at Florida State Prison.
Here are some other facts:
* The cells: A day-to-day cell on Death Row measures 6 feet wide
by 9 feet long by 9.5
feet high; the
death-watch cell, where an inmate is placed once the governor signs
a death
warrant, measures 12 feet by 7 feet wide by 8.5 feet
* Meals: Three a day served on trays at 5 a.m., 10:30-11 a.m. and 4-4:30
* Exercise: Twice a week for two hours in exercise yard.
* Visitors: Allowed weekends from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., unless
visitor lives more than 200
miles away, then visitor can visit both Saturday and Sunday.
* Showers: One every other day.
* Clothing: Orange T-shirts and blue pants.
* Entertainment: Inmates can have a black & white TV --
no cable -- radios, snacks and
cigarettes in
their cells. They receive mail every day except holidays and
weekends. Church
services available on closed-circuit television.
* Security: Inmates are escorted everywhere in handcuffs and many times in shackles.
