On December 2, 2002 Lobsang
Dhondup and Tenzin Delek Rinpoche,
a very respected Buddhist leader, were sentenced to death in Tibet.
They are accused of being involved in bomb explosions in Eastern Tibet
but the Chinese government has not produced any proof publicly and it is
likely they are being targeted because of their political and cultural
beliefs
and activities. Lobsang Dhondup was sentenced to immediate death and
Tenzin Delek Rinpoche was sentenced to death, with a suspension of two
years. Lobsang Dhondup could be executed as early as December 13,
2002.
Between his arrest in April of this year and the day of his sentencing
on
December 2, 2002, Tenzin Delek Rinpoche was held incommunicado.
According to reliable sources, when he was convicted on the 2nd he
accused the court of false allegations and unfair trial proceedings and
shouted "Long Live His Holiness the Dalai Lama." Chinese security
officials gagged his mouth and dragged him out of the courtroom.
